THE RALLY 2008 RECAP

PERRY, GEORGIA AND THE RALLY 2008 STILL ON YOUR MIND

From near and far, in rigs and in cars, for four days in March they converged on the Crossroads of Georgia for North America’s largest RV gathering—The Rally 2008. The Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter was at the epicenter of it all—good times, good friends and good information—as more than 7,600 RVers journeyed to Perry for some southern hospitality, heartland charm and all things RV.

The ninth annual event featured something for everyone: top-name entertainment; a multitude of RV- and travel-related seminars; thousands of new RVs on display; parts, accessory and gadget exhibits; tours of the surrounding Perry area; dozens of organized activities and even a chance to walk down memory lane at a retro-style prom. If you saw it in a magazine, passed it on the highway or imagined it in a dream, you could probably see it at the Perry Rally. Many of North America’s major RV manufacturers and dealers showcased their latest models--from pop-up tent trailers to luxury coaches, there were RVs to suit everyone’s needs and pocketbooks. And, in the sprawling indoor exhibit area, Rally attendees could shop to their hearts content for everything else RV, from widgets to apparel to art.

Rally goers even had an opportunity to put on their dancing shoes and show their stuff with a prom, dance contest and world-record attempt. Sporting a St. Patrick’s Day theme, “Prom Night in Perry” featured the Michael Andrew Big Band playing hits from the ’40s, the crowning of a prom king and queen, and the chance for prom goers to show their skills in a dance contest. And, a record was toppled when, in conjunction with prom night, 1,128 couples danced the foxtrot to “Fly Me to the Moon” for five consecutive minutes and set a new world record for Most Couples Dancing!

When they weren’t boogying on the dance floor, Rally attendees could be found moving to the music by the top entertainment, headlined by crooner Bobby Vinton. Vinton, whose performance included a solo by his daughter Hannah and a duet with son Robby, wowed the audience with his well-known repertoire from “Roses are Red” to “Blue Velvet.” On other nights, Rally goers were treated to the bluegrass stylings of 12-time Grammy Award winner Ricky Skaggs and cabaret-style vocalist Jaimie Roberts.

Four-legged campers also had an opportunity to join in on the fun in the fifth annual Rally Dog Show. Canines of all shapes and sizes competed in categories including best costume, slowest sitter, silliest pet trick, best howl and best tail wagger.
